Kitchen Disasters!

Having made the stew with ale as featured on this blog, I popped it in the oven. After a couple of hours I checked to see if it was OK and to add a bit more water. Somehow I managed to twist the tea towel around the bottom of the casserole pot and spill the whole lot over the hob. I could have cried, but instead tried to rescue it and put it back in the pot. It still tasted really nice, if a bit light on sauce!

A Sainsbury's 'own-label' vintage Champagne has today triumphed at the International Wine Challenge, being rated as good as leading designer brands costing up to three times more money.

Blind taste tests of many of the world's favourite vintage Champagnes have seen Sainsbury's Taste the Difference Premier Cru Vintage Champagne 1997 win gold at the annual event.

At just £23.99 per bottle, Sainsbury's offering comes in at less than a third of the price of some premium Champagnes, rating as highly as the likes of Veuve Cliquot 1998 Vintage and Taittinger , meaning that consumers can indulge in fine Champagne without spending a fortune.

Melissa Draycott, Champagne buyer from Sainsbury's says, "I am so delighted that our Taste the difference Champagne has won gold, it is a fantastic acknowledgement of its quality. I know our long term supplier Duval Leroy, who has been supplying us for 28 years, will also be thrilled. This is a delicious Champagne and great value for money."

This medal follows a previous accolade which saw Sainsbury's Taste the Difference Premier Cru Vintage 2000 voted 'best buy' in a Which? Champagne taste test resulting in a sales surge of 3000 per cent. This year's success further reinforces the importance of own-brand wines in the market place, where cost and value for money are becoming ever more important in an increasingly competitive environment.
